This is a great summary of the issues that come up when hiring privately. Most people don’t realize that they may be the caregiver’s EMPLOYER for legal purposes, with REAL responsibilities and consequences for not fulfilling those responsibilities. There is nothing theoretically wrong with hiring privately IF the client or the client’s family (1) understand their responsibilities as employers and (2) fulfill those responsibilities, to the letter, every day, every payday. If you add up all the costs of fulfilling those responsibilities, costs in terms of time and money, it may actually be less expensive in the long run to work with an employer-model home care agency instead.
